If you met my family you would probably say we were a little uptight, maybe strange, and tough. And you know what? You're right.
My name is Jenna Gonzales. I am 19 and I live with my father, Paul, my mother, Trisha, my 16 year old sister, Megan and my baby brother, Bobby. We live in a 4 story home in the woods about five miles from any kind of civilization in Utah. W have lived here for three two years now. We moved around a lot. We have a lake in our back yard and get access to anything we want. We have what we call the scanner. It allows us to see any police activity going on within 300 miles near us, it allows us to hook up to cameras on the street lights in the two nearby towns and we can see everything going on around our property.
We like to take things into our own hands when it comes to justice. Everyday is about the same here. Unless we run into trouble.
So here is how my days usually go:
Wake up at 5:30 am, check the scanner for anything out of the ordinary, shower, get dressed, make breakfast, talk to my mother, father and sister at the breakfast table, check the scanner, get in my car and head to the community college. I am studying music. I then go to my favorite coffee shop for lunch, check on Megan at her school, go shopping, go home, check the scanner, help my mom cook dinner, help my mom clean the house, check the scanner, help Megan with her homework, take care of feeding Bobby, eat dinner with the family, check the scanner, talk to friends, watch TV, go online, check the scanner and go to bed.
But things change every now and then. Like The beginning of this week. Things changed a lot.
It was a very cold winter morning. I really did not want to get out of bed. My bed was warm and comfortable and outside it was 14 below zero. I doubted I would even be able to get my car started. I sighed and looked at the clocked on my nightstand. 5:37 am. I sighed again and saw my breath. I threw the covers off of me and slowly made my way to the scanner which sat on a table near my window. I adjusted the cameras to every location. Checking everywhere around our house. Everything looked normal. I then checked the police scanner which we had access to. A man was being chased for reckless driving. Not something we normally cover unless we are right there in the area. The police could take this one. I quickly got into the shower and loved the feel of the hot water running down my body. It was like a warm friendly hug. Perfect. I got dressed in a pair of black slacks and a heavy red sweater. I didn't really have any ideas for my long curly black hair today so I just put it back in a ponytail. I was grateful that my mom made breakfast this morning because I was just too tired. My mom made fried eggs, bacon, oatmeal, and fresh squeezed lemon aid. "Good morning." She said in a sing song voice as she handed me a plate.
"Morning." I answered back trying to sound energetic.
Just then my dad came down stairs. His loud deep voice filled the kitchen. "Morning Jenna." He kissed the top of my head and move his large frame passed the table and over to the stove. He wasn't fat but he had very broad shoulders and large muscles. "Morning Tris." He places a quick kiss on mom's lips and stole a piece of bacon from the frying pan. He sat down at the head of the table and tickled Bobby under his chin. Bobby giggled and jumped in his high chair playfully. "How did you sleep?" Dad directed at me.
"Oh fine." I lied. I barely slept at all last night. My mind was racing with so many thoughts, and decisions. "And you?" I asked cheerfully.
He nodded. "Like a baby." He smiled a warm smile and glanced around the large kitchen. "Where's Megan?"
Just on cue Megan came running down stairs. Her room was on the fourth floor as was mine. My mom and dad's room was on the second floor. Megan was wearing a light blue long skirt and a white off the shoulder blouse. Her normally short curly blonde hair was straight today. "Here I am, dad. " She quickly sat down next to me and threw her large leather purse on the floor next to her chair. "Hey Jen, morning mom." She smiled and thanked my mom for the plate of breakfast.
"Well correct me if I'm wrong but didn't you use to have curly hair and wear pants all the time?" My mom said as she sat at the other head of the table.
Megan waved her off and tried to smuggle a smile with her fork full of eggs.
"I think your right darling." My father said. "Who is this child we have seated at our table today?"
Meagan rolled her eyes. "Daaad." She drew out. "Please. It's not a big deal. I just thought I'd try something different. That's all."
"Oh." My dad winked at me then started eating.
"Anyway." I blurted out just to stop the awkward silence, "any plans for today?"
"Well," My dad said then just stared at this plate for a while. This was strange. The look on his face was strange. The tone to his voice was strange. The vibe I felt coming from him was strange. Something big was happening.
My mom must have sensed something was up too because the look on her face said she was worried. "What is it, dear?"
My dad cleared his throat. "Well, I got a call from Tom last night."
Tom Greyson was in charge of protecting my family from our enemies and from the authorities. If he called that usually meant trouble.
"What did he want?" Megan whined.
"Megan!" My mom scolded.
"What!" Megan threw her fork down on her plate and crossed her arms across her chest. "Every time he calls that means someone is trying to arrest us or kill us."
No one responded to her complaint because we all knew it was true. "She's right, dad." I said. "So why did Tom call?"
"I know I said we were going to wind down from the business for a while but something has come up." He glanced over at each of us then cleared his throat again. "Somehow some information about our operation has been getting to the police and soon our enemies will figure out where we are.”
My mom, Megan and I all started talking at once. Asking questions and demanding answers.
My dad slammed his fist onto the table which caused us all to jump and be quite. “Calm down!” He yelled. “Look, I don't know who has been leaking information, I don't how long it has been going on for and I don't even know if the police have our names yet.”
I feel my heart tightening in my chest. This can't be happening. Not now! “Are we going to move again?” I asked quietly.
“I don't know yet. Tom is going to call me tonight and let me know what we are going to do.”
“Why can't we decide what we are gonna do?” Megan shrieked. “This is our life. Why does Tom have to make the decision?”
“Megan!” My mom scolded. “You will not use that tone with your father.”
Megan rolled her eyes and folded her arms across her chest.
“Tom makes the decision because he finds out things before we do and he is in charge of protecting us.”
“It's not fair!” Megan and I said at the same time.
“What is wrong with you two?” My mom glared at us both. “You never had problems with us moving before.”
I glanced over at Megan. She had a secret too. I could tell she was looking for some sort of excuse. I rushed in with an excuse I hoped with cover for both me and Megan. “We have been here so long. This place finally feels like home.” I looked over at Megan and she thanked me with her eyes.
“Yeah mom.” Megan began, “I love this place. We can't leave. And what about all my friends from school? Christy, Ashley, Susan, Rachel...”
“We don't know that we have to move yet.” My dad interrupted. “So just calm down and go about your day like you always do.”
So Megan and I excused ourselves and went to my room. “You want a ride to school today?” I asked Megan as she waited for me to get my bag. I let her borrow my heavy denim coat to match her outfit. It didn't quite fit but she would just take it off once she got inside the school
She nodded and then followed me back downstairs and said goodbye to our parents. I blasted the heat in my car and drove in silence to school. Megan was wiggling around in the passenger seat. She was nervous and had something on her mind. “Wanna talk about it?” I asked.
She looked over at me. Her green eyes staring at me. “It's not an it. It's a him.”
I smiled. “I figured as much.”
“Oh, Jen. His name is Will. He is just amazing. He is cute and smart and funny and kind and just so perfect. After gym class he always waits for me and walks me to my next class. And...and...” She looked out the window and watched as little flurries of snow started to fall.
She doesn't say anything but I hear her sniffle like she was crying. “Hey Megan. Don't cry. You'll ruin your makeup.”
She laughed and took a quick look in her compact mirror. “Will told me he loved me.” She sighed. “We have secretly been dating for five months now.” She smiled and stared out the window again. “He kissed me too about a week ago. It was so perfect. Awkward at first but still perfect. Now after every class he always kisses me before we take off for our next class.” She sighed again.
“Five months! Wow! A kiss too? Do you love him?”
She smiled down at her hands. “Yes.” She whispered.
“So why don't you tell mom and dad about him?” I ask.
“I'm scared to tell mom but then she might tell that. And I'm scared of him. You know how dad is. He'll say I'm too young and he'll want Will to come over and dad will interrogate him.” She shakes her head and sighs. “I can't put Will through that.”
I completely understand where she is coming from. That is exactly what my dad would do. “And so that is why you are upset about the fact that me might have to move?”
“Yes!” She shrieked. “God knows where the hell we would have to move to. China? I can't leave now! I'll never see him again.”
I didn't say again because I knew she was right.
“But seriously, Jen. What about you? You're hiding something too. Out with it.” Megan demanded.
I shook my head. “It's complicated.”
“I'm waiting.” But by that time we were already at her school. She glanced out the window and by the way she smiled, I guessed Will was waiting for her. “Oh! Look! That's him!” She pointed just when he wasn't looking to a tall boy with short brown hair, black jeans and a denim jacket on. “Oh thanks for letting me wear your denim coat. Now we will be matching!”
I laugh and give her a quick hug. She opens the door and was about to close it when she stopped. “Hey! This conversation isn't finished. You are gonna tell me what is so 'complicated'. See ya!” And with that she slammed the door and ran up to her secret boyfriend. I watched as she rose on her tiptoes and gave him a hug. I felt like a stalker watching but I wanted to make sure she got inside safely. She and Will stood outside talking and then Will gave her a quick kiss on her lips. Megan looked overjoyed. She wrapped her arm around his waist, his arm around her shoulders and then they walked inside together. Then I drove off.
When I get to the community college I see my friend Opal sitting on the steps talking to someone I never seen before. He is is tall dark and handsome. His hair is black and a little on the long side, his muscles are huge. Not huge like a wrestler but huge like he works out. A lot. I find my heart racing. I know if Opal is dating him I can't be thinking the way I am thinking but I can't help myself. I get out of my car and walk over to them and I put on my best smile. “Hey Opal!” I say very cheerfully. They both turn to look at me. His eyes are an amazing color of brown. When he saw me he smiled a smile which made me heart stop. I was melting. In the dead of winter I was melting.
Opal ran up to me and gave me a big hug. Mystery man stood up too and stood along side of Opal. “Jenna I would like you to be Brad Richards. Brad this is my friend Jenna Gonzales.” Opal always introduced people with their first and last name. Brad stretched out his hand and shook mine. His grip was strong and warm and his eyes locked with mine. His smile was welcoming. So welcoming I wondered what it would be like to kiss that smile. “Hi.” I say with a smile.
“Hi. Nice to meet you.” His voice is just what I imaged. Deep and rugged and sexy. I was dying.
“Brad just signed up here. He is studying music. I was telling him that you were too.” Opal stated.
He was going to be taking the same classes as me?
“Really? Awesome.” I keep smiling. “What instruments do you play?”
“I play the guitar and a little bit on the piano. I use to play the flute when I was younger. What about you?
“I also play the guitar but I was never really good with the piano or the flute. I can play the violin though. And I am learning how to play the saxophone.”
“Awesome.” Brad says cheerfully. Opal's phone starts to play a boring land line ring tone and she jumps. “It's mom. Hold on a sec, Jenna.” She answers the phone and walks a short distance away from Brad and I. I desperately search my brain for a conversation.
“So,” I begin, “How long have you known Opal?” It was the only thing I could think of. He looks at me a little bit confused.
“My entire life.” He says and still looks at me like I was crazy for asking.
“Really? Wow!” I say. I am shocked because Opal has never mentioned this extremely hot boy named Brad before.
“Um yeah sure.” He looks over at Opal but I can't see his face now. He turns back and smiles at me. “Wait a minute. Do you think...” He stops and laughs.
I am so confused at this point. Opal walks back over to us, shoving her phone into her back pocket of her jeans. “What's so funny?”
I shake my head and shrug my shoulders because I have no idea what is funny.
Brad stops laughing and puts his hand on Opal's shoulder. “Opal, please tell her who I am.”
She shoves off his hand and looks at him funny. “I already did. I did right, Jenna? This is Brad.”
He shakes his head. “No, you dummy.” She laughs again. “Jenna. I'm Brad. Opals brother.”
I drop my jaw. “You're Opals big brother? The ugly, jerk, control freak? That older brother?”
He spreads out his arms. “The one and only.”
I glare at Opal. “This is him? But he is hot-t-t-t....” I try and stop myself but the words already spill out.
“Ew!” Opal punches me in the arm.
Brad smiles at me big. “My first day here and I already have a girl crushing on me. Nice.” He winks at me and I feel my face get hot.
“She does not have a crush on you!” Opal glares at Brad. The she turns to me. “Do you, Jenna?”
Brad and Opal stare at me. Brad with a smile and Opal with a glare.
“Um no of course not.” I say but I can tell that they both now I am lying.
Opal lets out a disgusted noise and grabs my arm and pulls me inside the building leaving Brad to trail behind us still smiling.
“I can't believe you like him.” Opal says as she drags me along.
“I can't believe you said he was ugly.” I try to sneak a peek of him over my shoulder but Opal won't let me.
She makes another disgusted noise. “If you're gonna make googly eyes at him at least wait until I leave.” She lets go of my arm and runs ahead of me. I stop and watch her run away. Is she really that upset that I think her brother is good looking?
“Hi.” I hear a soft whisper from behind me. A very husky whisper. His breath tickles my ear which sends shivers up and down my spin. I can't be feeling like this. I can't.
I turn and smile at Brad. “Hi again.” I say which sounds like it comes out like a squeak. I clear my throat and try to speak again. “I am sorry about what I said before.”
“What? About you thinking I am hot?” He teases me.
I roll my eyes. “No. About you being the jerk and control freak and ugly.”
His smiles widens. “It's cool. I know you were just repeating everything Opal has just ever said about me. She says that to everyone. I don't mind. Especially when a pretty girl then calls me hot right afterward.”
I hide my face with my hands. “Yeah OK so yes you are hot but that doesn't mean I have a crush on you.”
“No. Hell, you could be a jerk for all I know. And a control freak.”
Brad frowns, nods his head and then walks away. I would have walked in the other direction but he was heading to the same class I was going to so I had no choice but to follow him. This was going to be an interesting day.
I was finding it very hard to stay focused throughout the day. My mind kept drifting back to Brad. I don't know why though because I barely knew anything about him. When lunch time rolled around I was actually glad to get away from him. As I was driving to the coffee shop my cell phone started ringing. I glanced down at in in the passenger seat. I was tempted to ignore it. I really didn't want to deal with having to explain myself to Opal right now but something inside me told me to answer it. “Hey.” I said into the phone and waited for yells in return.
“Look, Jenna. I'm sorry for the way I acted. I guess I just automatically think my brother is a toad and everyone else should think that way too. I'm sorry.”
I sighed with relief. “No need to be sorry...” I start to say but she interrupted me.
“Oh yes I do! I was acting like a total bitch and you know it!”
“Ah-ha!” She shrieks and then we both laugh. “So are you headed to the coffee shop?”
“Yep. You coming?” I ask but hope that she says no. I am afraid she will want to talk about Brad and I just want to forget him. If we have to leave, there is no point in getting involved with someone and a boy will ruin my plans right now.
“No. I think I will show Brad around. Bye!” Then she hangs up. Thank God.
When I pulled up in front of the coffee shop I see Megan and Will sitting inside at one one the window booths. He has his arm around her shoulders and she is snuggled real close to his side. I suck in a deep breath and walk inside. At first they don't noticed me until I walk right past them like I don't see them either and I am just going to a table.
“Jenna!” Megan shouts. She sits up straight but stays just as close to Will's side.
I pretend to be surprised. “Megan? What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be in school?” My eyes drift over to Will. He looks unfazed by my presence.
“Oh please. I don't need another mom.” She looks at Will and he smiles at her. “Will, this is my sister, Jenna.” She looks at me. “Jenna, this is Will.”
Will quickly removes his arm from around Megan's shoulder and he sits straight up. “Sister? Oh um hi. Nice to meet you.” He looks around nervously.
Megan rolls her eyes. “Will, it's okay. Jenna is cool.”
Will only relaxes a little bit. “So what are you two doing here?” I say and sit the the booth in front of them.
“So we skip one day. Big Deal?” Megan rolls her eyes and sits closer to Will who seems to be jumpy now but he puts his arm around her anyway.
“Megan.” I scolded. Wow. I really do sound like my mom.
“Will, excuse me and my sister for a tiny sec.” Megan kisses his cheek and slides out of the booth and pulls me with her. “Please, Jenna. If we are moving I want to be with him for as long as I possible can.” Megan says after she is sure we are far enough away so that Will can't hear us. Her voice is pleading and her eyes are desperate.
I put my hands on her shoulders to try and comfort her. “Don't worry. I won't tell mom or dad.”
Megan visibly relaxed. “Thanks.” She whispered.
“But the school is gonna call them.”
Megan is smiling now. A very mischievous smile which reaches her eyes and makes her look completely different. “Oh don't worry about that. I'll take care of it.” She looks over at Will then back at me. “Hey! You never told me what is so complicated.”
“Oh little sister. It just got more complicated today.” I think back to Brad. His amazing chocolate eyes and his smile which could bright up the universe. At least my universe anyway.
“What are you talking about?” Megan looks back at Will and smiles. “Wait!” She looks back at me with a huge smile. “Did you meet someone?
I try to hide my smile but I can't. “Yes. Just today.”
“So then what was so complicated before today?”
“Megan!” Will called her over before I could say anything.
“I got to go. You better tell me later.”
“Only if you promise me you two will head on back to school now.”
Megan rolls her eyes and sighs. “Oh God. Fine!”
“You want me to pick you up after school?”
“No. I'll take the bus. Bye!” She walks away and then I watch as she and Will leave.
After I order a cup of coffee and a bagel I find myself thinking about Brad again. Stop! You don't know him. This will screw up your plans. I tried to stop thinking about him but it wasn't working.
After a while I drove back to school and found my professor talking to a man who seemed very angry. They arguing about something. I tried to get closer without being seen.
“I don't care what has to be done! Just do it! And don't come here again!” I heard my professor tell the man in front of him.
“Fine.” The man said, “But if anything goes wrong, it'll be on your hands.” The man started to turn to leave and that is when his eyes connected with mine. His stare was cold and piercing. This man was dangerous. I waved my hand in a innocent manner hoping to give the impression that I didn't hear anything. He turned and walked off towards a dark green van parked across the seat. I found myself staring as he drove away. There was something going on. I wasn't sure what but I was going to find out what it was.
“Hello Jenna.” My professor stood behind me and smiled.
“Professor Tetlow. How are you today?” I hoped he didn't hint the fear in my voice. If he was talking to that man who just drove away then maybe he was dangerous as well.
“Oh same old same old. But are you alright? You look like you've seen a ghost.” He stepped closer which made me altogether more scared.
“No. I'm fine. It's just freezing out here.” I said probably too quickly.
“Well, you should be getting inside anyway. You don't want to be late for class.” He gave me an eery smile and then walked inside.
I shivered but not because of the cold. I followed him a few paces behind inside. I didn't see Opal or Brad in the halls which was just as well. I had to stop thinking about any type of relationship with Brad. It wasn't in my plans to start dating. At least not now anyway.
“Jenna!” I heard Opal shout. She was dashing across the parking lot of the college over to my car. I noticed Brad walking slowly behind her. He smiled a little then quickly frowned. Probably because he remembered what I said to him earlier. I felt terrible for saying it afterward but I hadn't had the chance to apologize yet. I quickly unlocked my car and threw my purse onto the passenger seat and then leaned up against the door trying to look cool. “Thank God you haven't left yet!” She said as she got closer and then slowed her pace. Brad stopped along side her.
“Why? What's up?” I asked and avoiding looking at Brad.
Opal let out a frustrated sigh and threw a mean glare at Brad. “Somebody forgot to put gas in his car and my dad borrowed my car because his breaks are out. Can you give us a ride home?”
I looked over at Brad who was now sitting on the trunk . “Sure.” I said while I shooed him off my car.
“Gah!” Opal hugged me quick and let out a sigh of relief. “I would hate to have to wait for a bus.”
Opal quickly got into the passenger seat while Brad got into the backseat. As we drove to their house Opal blasted the radio to country music. I preferred pop but I didn't want to have to keep wrestling over the radio.
“Why are you friends with her?” Brad leaned into the front seat and whispered into my ear. I looked over at Opal. She was dancing in her seat and singing loudly to Taylor Swift. I loved Opal but she could not sing.
“She's your sister.” I whispered back and smiled.
He chuckled a low deep laugh. “Touche'”
I smiled and focused back to the icy road. “Hey Opal!” I shouted over the music.
She turned down the music and glared at me playfully. “What?”
“Why not put on some of my music for a little while?”
“C'mon sis.” Brad leaned forward a little more and pounced his sister playfully in the arm. “I want to hear her Jenna's taste in music.” Opal pouted then put on a pop station. One of my favorite songs were playing by Becky G and of course I couldn't help but to sing along. I could hear Brad laughing from the back seat. “This is exactly what I would expect you to like.” Brad stated after he contained his laughter.
“What is that suppose to mean?” I pretended to be insulted but I knew he was just teasing me. “I have excellent taste in music, thank you very much.”
“I never said you didn't, girly. You're just very predictable.”
“Oh you think so huh?”
“Yup!” Brad pointed out the window directed me to turn. “I got you all figured out.”
“Is that so?” Opal piped up and made a funny face at Brad.
“Yup!” He declared and flicked her nose.
“I'll have you know I am very unpredictable.” I said louder than needed.
“Yeah yeah you keep telling yourself, girly.”
“Ugh! Stop calling me that!”
I let out a disgusted noise. “Yes!” I said through gritted teeth.
“Hello? Can I turn on my music now?” Opal shouted and went back to the country station before I gave my permission.
Once we finally got to their house Opal told me to wait outside while she went inside to go get one of her favorite Cd’s to let me borrow. I stood outside and Brad waited outside with me. “I'm sorry for what I said earlier. Ya know, about you being a jerk and all that.”
Brad waved it off like it was nothing but he looked hurt when I first said it. “I knew you didn't mean it.”
“Oh right because you have me figured out, right?” I said with a smile and rolled my eyes.
“Exactly.” He winked. “You see, I knew you were just embarrassed for admitting you think I'm hot. And if I might add, you're adorable when you blush.”
“Oh shut up!” I swatted his arm and he laughed. Oh God, his laugh sent shivers down my spin. It drove me crazy. So crazy I could fall in love with it. It or him? No! Not him! I can't!
“Oh admit it. You are just dying to kiss me.” He leaned closer and whispered, “Admit it.”
I leaned closer so that our lips were just inches apart. “You're full of yourself. Admit it.”
He shrugged his shoulder and smiled. “Maybe I am but I also know what is going on in that pretty head of yours.”
“Was that a compliment?”
“Yes. Maybe. Depends.”
I raised my eyebrow and my smile grew wider. “Depends on what exactly?”
Brad got so close I could feel his breath on my lips. “Depends on if you want it to be.”
I sucked in my breath and my gaze dropped to his lips. I was playing with fire here, I knew it.
“Well?” Brad whispered, “Do you want it to be?”
Thankfully, Opal just then came running out of the house. I quickly moved away from Brad. He was so close I could feel his warmth and the minute I moved away from him, I missed it. “I got it!” Opal waved the Cd it her hand and put herself in between Brad and I. “I just cleaned my room yesterday. I can't find anything in there!” She handed me the Cd and looked behind her at Brad and then she looked back at me. “What happened between you two?”
“Nothing!” I said too quickly. I looked over Opal's shoulder to Brad. He had on the most mischievous smile which made me blush.
“Yeah.” Brad said softly. “Nothing happened, sis.”
Opal looked back and forth at Brad and I. “Right.” She dragged out. “Whatever. I want that Cd back this weekend when you come over to my bonfire party.”
I nodded and threw the Cd into my car.
“You're coming to the party?” Brad's voice sounded excited and casually all at the same time. How did he manage that?
“Yes she is! But she is mine so don't think for one minute you can steal her away from me!” Opal pulled me close to her side and looped her arm through mine.
Brad rolled his eyes. “Wouldn't dream of it, sis.”
“Good!” Opal said and turned back to me. “So see you Saturday?”
“You're not going to school tomorrow?” I asked and chuckled a little when I saw Brad making funny faces behind Opal. She apparently didn't notice.
“Nope! I'm taking a sick week. It's too cold.” She said casually. “And speaking of cold, it's freezing out here. I'll see ya! Bye!” She gave me a quick hug then rushed inside. Brad started following her slowly.
“Bye, girly.” He whispered in my ear as he pasted me. I tried to glare at him but I know it failed into a smile. I quickly got into my car and drove home putting as much distance between Opal's extremely hot brother and I.
When I got home I quickly ran upstairs to my room and checked the scanner. Everything was fine. Just then I remembered the man my professor was fighting with. I wondered if it was something I should myself with. If anything goes wrong, it'll be on your hands. The man's words replayed in my mind. What could he have meant? I really didn't want to tell my dad about it. It could be nothing. My dad already had too much to worry about. And right now, we really needed to lay low so the police don't pick up on our trail.
“Jenna?” Megan knocked on my door.
“Come in.” I called back.
She walked in wrapped up in a towel and holding my denim jacket. Her hair was still dry so I know she was just about to take a shower. “Thanks for letting me borrow your jacket.” She tossed it onto my bed and sat down.
“No problem.” I picked it up and hung it in the back of my closet.
“So. Tell me what's going on.”
Just then my dad walked into my room. “Hey pretty girls.”
“Dad!” Megan shrieked and quickly pulled my throw blanket off my bed and covered herself up.
My dad rolled his eyes and sighed. “How was your day, ladies?” He took a seat at my desk and casually crossed one leg over the other. His posture said he was relaxing yet his face looked older. Older than just a couple days ago. I was shocked. The stress of the everything must be taunting him more than I thought. He had dark bags under his eyes, wrinkles started to creep onto his neck. I wonder if I would find a gray hair among his brown head of hair.
I was tempted to tell him about my professor and that strange man but I decided against it. “It was fine. How was your day?” I asked and sat next to my sister in my bed.
My dad made a grunt noise but said nothing about his day. “How was your day, Megan?”
Megan glanced at me and smiled slightly. “Normal.” She said.
My father nodded and relaxed a little more. “I was worried the police or our enemies might have got more leads and went poking their noses around the schools and colleges looking for you two.” Again, I thought back to the scene at the college. Should I tell him about it? Could it be important? What should I do? “Well, dinner will be ready soon. Get ready.” My dad left and Megan dropped the blanket on the bed.
“Megan, something did happen at the college today. I don't know if I should tell dad. He has so much to worry about already.” I quickly said with desperation in my voice.
“Tell mom. She will know what you should do. But first tell me.” I quickly informed her of everything I heard them say, the expressions their faces held, the way that stranger looked at me, the way everything about that situation bothered me in every way. “Hmm,” Megan said after a while, “I can see where it could be something,” she paused, “And I could see where it could be nothing. Tell mom while you two are cleaning the kitchen after dinner. I'm gonna go get dressed.” Megan left my room and I sat on my bed with my thoughts racing at full speed.
At the dinner table no one said much. Megan and I exchanged a few glances at each other while out parents talked about their day. I could barely eat half of what was on my plate. I felt sick to my stomach. “Jenna, you have barely touched your food.”
“I'm sorry, mom.” I said and tried to make my voice sound tired. “I'm just tired and have a stomach ache.”
My mom's face instantly flashed with worry. “Are you sick, baby?”
“No. I'm fine. I think I just need to turn in early today.” I excused myself and went up to my room. I laid in bed and found myself thinking about the situation with my professor and that stranger.
After a few minutes I dozed off for what seemed like only five minutes but when I woke up my desk clock said it was 12:45am.
I made my way downstairs to the kitchen and poured myself a bowl of cereal. “Jenna?” A deep voice came from the entrance of the kitchen.
“Hey dad.” I jumped, startled by his presence. I never knew him to be up this late.
He obviously didn't noticed that he frightened me because he didn't say anything. He slowly walked into the kitchen, sat at the counter next to me and poured himself a bowl of cereal as well. For a while he didn't say anything. His presence comforted me though. He knows. He knows something is wrong with you. Talk to him. I pondered on the thought of telling him everything. I knew I could really use help and guidance. “Dad?”
“Hmm.” He didn't look up from his blow of cereal but I knew by the tone of his voice that I had his full attention.
I figured I start small. “Something strange happened at the university today.” I filled him in on everything I saw and heard and the awful vibes I got from both, my professor and the stranger. My dad simply nodded but even only with the dim overhead light, I could still see the fear, fatigue, and anger in his eyes.
“I mean it could be nothing.” I reassured him.
“Sweetheart, someone has been leaking information about us to the police.”
“You don't think it's related to that, do you? It could be anything or it could be nothing but Professor Tetlow doesn't know anything about our operation. I rarely talk to him.”
“We have to think of every possible scenario.”
We both were silent for a while. Tell him. “Dad?”
I took a deep breath and tried to think of the worst possible think my dad could say or do to me. I'm 19 so he really has no control over me. But I really needed his help. “Dad, I'm pregnant.”
