My mind is empty as I stare at the blank screen in front of me. I have so much to say but I don't know how to say it.
I write to express thoughts, feelings and emotions. Do I want to write a love story so I can try to explain how wonderful and complex and awful love is? Should it have a happy or sad ending? Should the story be about a high school couple finally getting married or maybe about a mother and daughter struggling to co-exist with each other? Or do I want to write about a fantasy world to try to express the need to escape from the trails of this life and try and find something a little more easier to handle but harder to explain?
Words start to form on the screen as my fingers dance across my keyboard. Words become sentences, sentences become pages, pages become chapters and soon I feel fulfilled. My stresses melt away and I can feel more relaxed when I see my characters interact with each other. Their lives are just started as mine feels like it's ending.
I'm not the only one, am I?
Please, tell me that when you are watching people have a conversation with each other you put together in your mind where the people are from, how they know each other and try to create their story. Or maybe when you are watching a movie you think about how you would write it instead. What you would add to the story to make it a good read. Do you love meeting new people because it gives you new information for a new character in your story?
I can't be the only one. That would be weird. However, Buffy Andrews said, "Writers see the world differently. Every voice we hear, every face we see, every hand we touch could become story fabric." Lord Byron said, "If I don't write to empty my mind, I go mad." Anais Nin said, "We write to taste life twice, in the moment and retrospect." I can relate to all of these quotes from these other writers.
I like to think that writing is a form of art. It can be a masterpiece if we work hard on it. You know, if we make sure we notice the little details and make sure everyone can see the big picture we are trying to put out there. Writing is just as beautiful as a painting or a song.
I also think not all writers are the same. We all write for different reasons. We all have our own unique way of doing things. Some of us take a lot longer than others to write something. What to write may come easier to others.
I don't think anyone should compare their writing to someone else's. It is perfectly fine to read someone else's writing to expand your mind and just to relax. However, I don't ever want to hear you say some else is a better writer than you. You don't know how long it took them to write that story, or how many rewrites they made, or how long they have been writing altogether. The more you focus on your own writing, the better and more accomplished you will become. You can always get better.
I just want to say that I believe in all of you out there who have a passion for writing like I do. I believe that you can accomplish anything. If you think you are good writer then work on it and become a great writer! Remember to take your time, review and rewrite, listen to the critics but only to improve your writing, always be open to new ideas and always believe in yourself.
