There was once a man named Dan who appeared to have it all.
Amazing jobs, good grades, friends, looks, God, everything. He was so easy to talk to and made friends with everyone. Everyone loved Dan.
No one knew him. If they did, they would know that he is utterly shattered.
His past was eating away at his soul. A long time ago he snapped and hurt a lot of the people closest to him. He tried to kill himself. He thought he was done.
But God had other plans for Dan. God wouldn't let Dan die. The people he hurt welcomed him back. They hugged him, cried with him, and took him back. However they were cautious. They were scared of getting hurt again so they built a wall. The good news it is only temporary. They just want to know that Dan is stable again.
Well, I've had the pleasure of meeting Dan this summer and let me tell you who I see. Dan is a energetic person who is always making everyone laugh. He is fun but also very smart. He tutors and is always helping people somehow. He is very genuine, kind, and caring. He is someone you can count on for anything. His love for God radiates from his smile and his eyes.
I see something else too. Maybe it is just because I am broken and still healing but I can his heart. It's struggling. His heart is hanging on by threads. Each time someone mentions his past, another thread breaks. The fact that people don't fully trust him like they had before, nags at Dan's heart constantly. He doesn't feel like he is given the credit due him for the changes he has made yet he, himself, doesn't give himself enough credit.
Dan is an almost whole person. However, there is one piece of him that is missing. He is in constant search for it and I don't think he even knows it. What is that one piece? I have no idea. You'll have to ask Dan yourself. Maybe it's innocence, maybe it's faith, love possibly, acceptance perhaps. Something is missing and he is lost without it.
I'll help him though. I will make sure he isn't alone. I'll pray for him every minute if I need to. It won't just be me though. Even his friends behind the wall will be there. They were always there for him. We all just want Dan to be stable, to be the best version of himself, and to be happy. We all love him him down to the missing piece.
